High five for Saints as Ryan makes Hull of a difference

-

RYAN FRASER’S late goal fired Southampton up to fifth in the Championship and left Hull stunned.

The Scot, on loan from Newcastle, stepped off the bench to grab a 95th-minute winner and shatter the hosts’ nine-match unbeaten run in the league at home.

Liam Rosenior’s side, who had earlier seen Liam Delap cancel out Will Smallbone’s opener, looked destined to claim a deserved point until Fraser combined with Flynn Downes to fire past Ryan Allsop.

“We asked for a few things after the break and the biggest was more aggression,” visiting boss Russell Martin said, after watching Fraser open his Saints account in style.

“From then on we were relentless, against very good opponents.”

Despite being more progressive, City struggled to translate promising positions into chances and fell behind when Smallbone turned home from Kyle Walker-peters.

But the hosts dragged themselves level when Delap converted for the third time since arriving on loan from Manchester City. Allsop produced a fine save to thwart Carlos Alcaraz but was powerless to prevent Fraser from pouncing.

“Conceding late is the hardest thing,” beaten Rosenior said.

“If you don’t put the ball away, then at least keep the door shut at the other end.” HULL: Allsop 8, Christie 6 (Coyle (64) 6), Jones 7, Greaves 6, Vinagre 6, Seri 7, Morton 6, Lokilo 6 (Connolly (76) 6), Twine 7 (Tufan (64) 6) Philogene 7, Delap 7 (Allahyar (82) 5) SOUTHAMPTON: Bazunu 6, Walkerpeters 7, Harwood-bellis 6, Bednarek 6, Manning 6, Smallbone 7 (Charles (87) 5), Downes 6, S Armstrong 7 (Fraser (84) 6), A Armstrong 6 (Mara (87) 5), Alcaraz 6 (Adams (69) 6), Sulemana 6 (Edozie (69) 6) STAR MAN: Ryan Allsop – The Hull keeper was in sparkling form.
