Musk says AI is threat to humanity & I’m terrified

-

I’M a self-confessed technophobe and galloping advances in AI are freaking me out.

Last month Meta debuted new Ai-focused products including a chatbot assistant.

These bots, they claim, will be more personable and will have all sorts of chatting abilities.

While our teen and his pals think these advances are “cool”, I’ve had sleepless nights thinking that soon the world will be like Terminator.

It’s as if all the sci-fi movies are playing out in real life.

My seven-year-old Erin was on a playdate and afterwards told me her friend’s boyfriend thought she was beautiful.

Apparently they had been sending pictures of themselves to this “boyfriend” on her friend’s tablet.

When I asked the friend’s mum what they were up to, she told me not to worry that it was a bunny game where the character interacts with them.

That’s even weirder I thought, a bunny bot in the ipad communicating with them.

My head was in a spin imagining some clandestine grooming AI robot hiding in the tablet.

When I told the mum that I was concerned she laughed and said: “Come on, don’t be so oldfashioned.”

I can’t create a technological nanny state outside the home – it’s impossible to regulate life outside our four walls.

We don’t want to act like fossils either around our kids but I’d rather be a technocurmudgeon than run the risk of AIS infecting my kids brain cells. US president Joe Biden is in my fearful camp. It’s believed that he signed a new executive order on artificial intelligence which was in part inspired by him watching Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part

One. The movie’s villain AI, ‘the Entity’, seemed to unsettle him.

This week at Bletchley Park in the UK delegates from 28 nations gathered to work together to contain the potential “catastrophic” risks posed by the huge advances in Artificial Intelligence.

It was here at the first ever international AI safety summit that Elon Musk warned of the threat AI poses to human beings if not regulated.

If billionaire Elon Musk, the man who brought us Ai-driven Tesla cars, is fearful that AI is an “existential threat” to humanity, it’s no wonder mammies like me are panicking about what the future holds for our kids.

I can’t sleep thinking the world will soon be like Terminator
