Super Van is bargain of season

- BY ALEX WOOD

MICKY VAN DE VEN is Tottenham’s trump card.

That is the view of former Spurs and Chelsea star William Gallas.

The Dutch centre-back was a relatively unknown quantity outside of the Bundesliga last season.

But Van de Ven, 22, has been a revelation since joining from Wolfsburg.

Former defender Gallas (below) said: “James Maddison is not the best signing of the season – Van de Ven is.

“We already knew how good Maddison was, and him going to Spurs was the natural progression.

“People aren’t surprised to see him doing so well, and Tottenham’s players have more quality than Leicester’s.

“Nobody knew Van de Ven prior to his arrival and he’s playing his first Premier League season.

“He had to adapt to a new team and a new league. He doesn’t make mistakes and he plays a very simple, effective game. People are starting to speak about him now and he’s starting to score.”

Spurs lock horns with Chelsea at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium tomorrow as they look to maintain an impressive start to the season.

Chelsea, however, are misfiring once again but Gallas has urged them not to panic buy in January.

The Frenchman added: “They’ve had injuries and players who haven’t performed as expected, but they’ve spent all that money for no results.

“I think it’d be better if the squad remained as it is for the remainder of the season. The squad should try to qualify for the Europa League.

“They have too many players, and they don’t know what they’re doing!

“Chelsea signing more players in January would be an admission that the club have made mistakes and it would also show that they don’t trust the squad they have.”
