Rob just the job as Fleming toasts 100 per cent record

-

CURTIS FLEMING hailed “a huge three points” at the end of an emotional week at Ashton Gate.

But Bristol City’s interim coach is not about to throw his hat into the ring as a possible replacement for sacked boss Nigel Pearson.

After savouring every moment as his side battled to overcome 10-man Wednesday, Fleming said: “I am taking things day by day and will do whatever job I am asked to do. If this proves my last game in charge at least I will have a 100 per cent record!

“It was a massive result at the end of a tough week.”

Wednesday were a man down from the 32nd minute when Barry Bannan was shown a straight red card for fouling Jason Knight on the edge of the box.

The visitors defended with tenacity but could not prevent centre-back Rob Dickie sliding in on 64 minutes to convert Tommy Conway’s deflected cross from the right.

Eight minutes later, Conway’s shot came back off a post and from the rebound substitute Sam Bell somehow contrived to hit the other upright. But

Wednesday never gave up and it took a brilliant Max O’leary save to keep out a close-range shot from Ashley Fletcher in the closing moments.

Owls boss Danny Rohl said: “I didn’t think it was a red card because we had two players covering.

“I’m proud of my team for how they reacted.” BRISTOL CITY: O’leary 8; Tanner 6 (Bell (61) 6), Vyner 7 (Naismith (61) 6), Dickie 8, Pring 6; M James 7, Gardner-hickman 6; Weimann 5 (Mehmeti (61) 6), Knight 7, Sykes 6; Conway 6 (Cornick (90) 5) SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Dawson 7; Iorfa 7, Diaby 8, Bernard 7 (Fletcher (85) 7); Paterson 7, Byers 7, Bannan 5, R James 6 (Famewo (83) 6); Gassama 6 (Vaulks (46) 6), Smith 6 (Valentin (46), 6), Musaba 6 (Johnson (83) 6) STAR MAN: Rob Dickie – City’s centreback defended strongly and scored for the second successive home game.
