The Glasshouse Edinburgh

- BY SHARON GREEN

WHERE AND WHY

Set in the heart of Edinburgh, five-star hotel The Glasshouse has certainly got spirit. Converted from the 170-year-old Lady Glenorchy Church, this handsome 77-room hotel boasts almost 100 rare whiskies and the suites are named after famous labels of Scotland’s greatest liquid export. Ours, the Glenfiddich Suite, offering dramatic views of Calton Hill through floor-to-ceiling windows and access to the beautiful rooftop garden, came with an enormous bed and a luxurious bathroom with waterfall shower and vast bath.

ON THE MENU

We booked the hotel’s Whisky Experience Package, which includes the Johnnie Walker Journey of Flavour tour on Princes Street. After whisking us through the 200-year history of the famous Scotch label we were treated to three whisky cocktails.

Back at the hotel’s cosy Snug bar, with its open fire pit, more treats were in store. Genial expert Ken Hanley introduced us to single malts; Ledaig, from the Isle of Mull, Glenfarclas distilled on Speyside, and Deanston from the central Highlands. But before a wee dram could pass our lips we were taught how to appreciate the elements and aromas – whether it be honey, lavender or even smoke.

Both afternoon tea and a seasonal all-day menu are served in The Snug.

In the Brasserie, a hearty full Scottish breakfast (£25) of bacon and eggs accompanied by haggis and potato scone, set us up for the day. A continental buffet and specialities such as smoked salmon and kippers are also offered.

WHILE YOU’RE THERE

Work off breakfast with a walk up Arthur’s Seat – a volcano sitting 823ft above sea level.

For more outstanding views climb UNESCO world heritage site Calton Hill to the National Monument, inspired by Athens’ Parthenon.

A tour of Edinburgh Castle is a must for firsttime visitors. It houses artefacts such as the Honours of Scotland (Britain’s oldest Crown jewels) and the Stone of Destiny.

Grassmarket has bars, restaurants plus independent designer and artisan shops.
