‘No wow ...but OK for now’

- BY ALEX WOOD

LIVERPOOL will keep evolving this season.

That’s the verdict of Reds and England striking legend Michael Owen.

“Liverpool do score goals and they’re doing well points-wise this year,” Owen said. “I still watch them and think that they’ve a fair way to go – but that’s not a criticism.

“It’s a new team and it’s a totally new midfield – and the attacking players are still learning to play with each other.

“I’ve got no problem with what they’re doing, and the results are still coming in this transitional period. So, I think it’s fine.”

Liverpool have not secured Premier League glory since the 2019-20 season, and failed to qualify for the Champions League last term. But boss Jurgen Klopp invested heavily on his squad in the summer.

Owen, who made 297 appearances for the Reds all told, scoring 158 goals, before joining Real Madrid in 2004, said: “I don’t watch Liverpool at the moment and jump off my seat and think, ‘Wow this is amazing football!’.

“Two or three years ago under Klopp, I did – then, after 15 or 20 minutes of a game it was over.

“Now they’re picking up results. They’re not at their absolute best, but they are working their way towards that.”

Liverpool could only manage a 1-1 draw with newly promoted Luton last weekend.

Luis Diaz scored a late equaliser after former Manchester United midfielder Tahith Chong had put the Hatters in front at Kenilworth Road.

However, Owen insists that Klopp and Co shouldn’t be despondent after dropping points against the new boys.

He added: “There’s no great panic, though that was a big disappointment for Liverpool, with Manchester City winning and then Arsenal losing.

“They could have gained some ground there, but it’s still early doors.”
