Lions’ Ed boy off to foursome start

- REF:

JOE EDWARDS enjoyed a winning start to his Millwall reign as the Lions roared to their first success in six games.

Edwards, former assistant to Frank Lampard at Chelsea and Everton, has replaced Gary Rowett, who left his job last month.

Left-back Murray Wallace’s first goal this season in the 31st minute, and midfielder George Saville’s second of the campaign 11 minutes later, laid the platform for victory.

Wes Harding then grabbed his third goal in four games after the interval to leave woeful Wednesday reeling.

A third defender netted when right-back Brooke Norton-cuffy added a fourth in the 72nd minute.

Boss Edwards, who saluted the travelling fans at the end, said: “I’m delighted. The fans were magnificent – they gave me a great reception.

“You can’t expect to come away and play nice football straight away, but once we settled we used the ball well and we dominated.”

Millwall struck first when George Honeyman swung over a left-wing corner and Wallace headed in firmly.

The visitors doubled their lead when Saville hit a sweet left-foot effort from the edge of the box.

Harding stretched the advantage, ramming in after goalkeeper Cameron Dawson failed to claim a low Casper De Norre cross, and it was too easy for Norton-cuffy when he cut in to finish.

Owls boss Danny Rohl, whose side are rock bottom, said: “It wasn’t good enough but we will learn from this.

“I’m still convinced we can stay up.” SHEFF WED: Dawson 5; Iorfa 6, Diaby 6, Bernard 5; Paterson 6, Byers 5 (Hendrick (46) 5), Bannan 6, Johnson 5 (James (75) 5); Gassama 5 (Windass (46) 6), Musaba 5 (Buckley (75) 5); Fletcher 4 (Cadamarteri (46) 6) MILLWALL: Bialkowski 7; Norton-cuffy 7 (Leonard (84) 5), Harding 7, Cooper 6, Wallace 7; Honeyman 6 (Esse (68) 5), De Norre 8, Saville 7 (Mitchell (76) 5), Longman 6 (Emakhu (76) 5); Flemming 6, Bradshaw 6 (Nisbet (84) 5) STAR MAN: Casper De Norre – Forceful display by the midfielder who had a hand in the third goal.
