Jackson leaves it late to stop Saints

A Armstrong 45

- By ROSS HEPPENSTALL

RUSSELL MARTIN was left fuming after Southampton were denied victory by Ben Jackson’s late equaliser.

Adam Armstrong put Saints ahead on the stroke of half-time with a neat finish from namesake Stuart’s left-wing cross.

It was his 10th goal of the season and Darren Moore’s Terriers were fairly awful during the first half.

Yet they improved markedly after the break and were rewarded in the 87th minute.

Terriers wing-back Jackson curled in a leftfoot cross from the right flank which evaded everyone and flew into Gavin Bazuna’s net.

After missing the chance to go third, Southampton boss Martin said: “The difference between the first and second half was too big.

“At half-time we spoke about our energy and making them work, but there was just nowhere near enough energy and intensity.

“Huddersfield grew in belief as the game wore on and we looked more tired.

“There are no excuses –

we should win the game but their goal was coming.

“It’s an opportunity missed and I’m really angry about our mentality. And I’ve told the players.”

Huddersfield counterpart Moore, meanwhile, has won just once in 10 games since succeeding the axed Neil Warnock.

Moore said: “The point was well deserved. It was unjust to go in one down, it was just a lapse of concentration.

“We thought if we could get more bodies up the pitch then we could get chances to capitalise.”
