WIEGMAN: WE MUST USE THE FOURCE!

- BY JACK LACEY-HATTON

SARINA WIEGMAN believes that England can reach the Women’s Nations League finals with a goal rush.

England must defeat Scotland on Tuesday at Hampden Park to also keep alive Team GB’S hopes of getting to next year’s Olympics – and if Belgium beat or draw with Holland, who lost 3-2 against the Lionesses on Friday, Wiegman’s side go through.

But if Holland win, the Lionesses would need a thumping defeat of the Scots to overcome a goaldifference deficit and pip the Dutch. Boss Wiegman said: “First, we must beat Scotland, and that’s what we’re going to do. And of course we’re going to push to score as many goals as possible, but we also have to be aware that we don’t want to concede any.

“We need to win with FOUR more goals than Holland do if they win. We can’t control what the Dutch do against Belgium... but we can try our best to get a good win and see what happens.”

Had England beaten Holland by two clear goals on Friday, they would have the superior head-to-head record and be in control of their destiny. But they were given a mountain to climb after keeper Mary Earps’ howler saw the Dutch move into a 2-0 lead. Earps failed to hold a tame shot from Lineth Beerensteyn for the Juventus forward’s second of the night.

Second-half goals from Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp wiped out the deficit before an added-time winner for the Lionesses from super-sub Ella Toone (left).

Wiegman insisted that Earps had no reason to feel guilty about her error, and added: “You win as a team and lose as a team. She didn’t let the team down. Everyone does their best.”
