Rohl or nothing as Owls turn on style

-

JUBILANT Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl hopes his team can grow in confidence after their much-needed win over Blackburn.

Goals from teenager Bailey-tye Cadamarteri, Marvin Johnson and Josh Windass did the damage as the Owls ended a run of four games without a win.

Championship leading scorer Sammie Szmodics cancelled out Cadamarteri’s first senior goal for the club, but the home side hit back with two more after the break to stun Rovers.

“We’re going in a good direction – that’s a good step forward,” said Rohl.

“We fought until the end and believe in what we’re doing. I’m so happy to take the points. They are strong opponents, but we played very well.”

Cadamarteri, 18, gave the Owls the perfect start when he fired them ahead after only five minutes with a sweet strike.

Szmodics continued his incredible form as he bagged his 14th league goal of the season to restore parity on 65 minutes with a fine header.

But the Owls had other ideas and second-half substitute Johnson pounced to put the Yorkshire side with a strike with 12 minutes left.

And just for good measure Windass added a brilliant solo third.

Rovers boss Jon Dahl Tomasson was sent off in the 81st minute by referee David Webb for venting his anger at the hosts’ second.

He did not speak to the media after the game – and the club issued a statement which said: “As part of the FA’S rules, any non-playing participant removed is not permitted to undertake post-match media commitments.” SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY: Dawson 6; Iorfa 2 (Palmer (4) 6), Diaby 7, Bernard 6, Famewo 6 (Ihiekwe (77) 6); Vaulks 7; Paterson 7, Byers 6 (Johnson (45) 8), Bannan 9 (Hendrick (88) 6), Windass 6; Cadamarteri 7 (Musaba (77) 6) BLACKBURN: Wahlstedt 5; S Wharton 6, Hill 6, Carter 5, Pickering 5; A Wharton 6, Tronstad 5; Moran 6, Szmodics 7, Brittain 6; Leonard 6 (Telalovic (79) 5) STAR MAN: Barry Bannan – The experienced midfielder inspired the Owls to a much-needed win.
