Sow hopeful seeds cure will ward off shouty mam

-

SHOUTY mammy was back this week. I figured I was burnt out or just wrecked but then a friend remarked:

‘Are you sure it’s not the perimenopause?’

I Googled it and I have some of the symptoms with rage there in abundance.

I was shouting so hard at my pair that my vocal cords hurt, they were fighting again as we were trying to get out for the school run.

As the fighting erupted I turned into the incredible hulk meets Cruella De Vil, with my body shaking in rage at them, I was disgusted at myself. I try to respond rather than react these days but my whole body was going into this convulsion type mortal anger.

My response did not match the stimulus, it had to be hormonal.

I was in self induced guilt for hours later. In a state I got onto my expert friend in Galway to see if I could opt for a remedy to abate my anger. Enter the Health and Nutrition coach Yvonne O’shaughnessy, I love her because she’s not about popping pills and all about natural ways we can cure ourselves and most importantly without breaking the bank.

Yvonne gave me this novel idea which I’ve started to adopt called Seed Cycling.

She told me that women are supposed to eat certain seeds at different times of the month.

In phase one, the follicular phase, we’re supposed to be eating flaxseed and pumpkin seed.

In the second phase, which is the luteal phase, we’re meant to eat sunflower seeds and sesame seeds, because they’re high in zinc, and they will actually help us to produce progesterone.

We produce oestrogen in the first two weeks and then it peaks and then we ovulate.

I mean I have no clue about this stuff, we were never taught about our own bodies in school.

God forbid you’d mention periods or babies or anything shameful.

Apparently when we ovulate, we release progesterone.

But the problem is that oestrogen sometimes doesn’t go back down, and it’s supposed to, it stays up. Yvonne tells me it’s

oestrogen dominance that causes the mammy rage and temper.

But if we have enough progesterone, we balance out our oestrogen because progesterone will naturally take over.

But if we get stressed out our body will hoover up the progesterone and then we’re left with the stress hormone cortisol as it won’t produce both at the same time!

So most of us mammies of my vintage are going around filled to the brim with a stress hormone that we can regulate by eating a humble seed.

I’m all into this now and the beauty is pumpkin, sunflower, sesame seed, flax seed are cheap to buy and you can throw them on top of any meal.

I’ve been lashing the seeds into everything, it beats lashing out at my kids.

We were never taught about our own bodies in school
