Rhodes made his tally for the season 13, with Andy Lyons also on target, with a double, but Critchley knows parent club Huddersfie­ld may want him back.

“He’s a good example to our strikers - we’re delighted he’s here and we really want that to continue for the year,” Critchley said.

The Royals went in front in the fourth minute through Harvey Knibbs, but Herbie Kane levelled with a penalty. Devante Cole gave Barnsley the lead ten minutes from time with a powerful 25-yard drive and Max Watters settled the issue.

Selles said: “We showed can compete in the league.”
