Spurs beat United to Timo prize

- BY RYAN TAYLOR

TIMO WERNER is expected in London today for a medical at Tottenham ahead of a season-long loan switch from RB Leipzig.

Spurs have moved swiftly to beat Manchester United to the punch as the Red Devils had also been weighing up a loan swoop for the 27-year-old German attacker.

Former Chelsea man Werner, who was signed by the Blues for £47.5million in the summer of 2020, has lost his way since returning to Leipzig in August 2022.

He has not featured in the Bundesliga since November 4 due to an adductor injury and has scored only twice in 14 games in all competitions this season.

But now he’s ready to help Tottenham in their push for a top-four finish after returning to full training at Leipzig’s winter camp in La Manga.

The deal was personally approved by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, who believes Werner could prove to be a valuable asset due to his speed and versatility.

Tottenham will cover Werner’s wages until the end of the season and they will also have an option to buy the player.

While the exact details of the option are still to be clarified, Werner has been given permission to travel to London.

Leipzig said that Werner would miss their friendly against St Gallen yesterday because he was negotiating with another club.

And boss Marco Rose last night confirmed Werner’s departure, saying the striker wanted to have more game time ahead of Euro 2024.

“It’s right that Timo wants to go on loan,” Rose told German Sky. “We wish him all the best and are keeping our fingers crossed for him.”

Spurs also remain in negotiations with Genoa over the signing of Romanian central defender Radu Dragusin.
