PJ: ‘I love all the oddness and the campness’ in Rocky Horror
PJ Gallagher fears he might break his ankle wearing high heels and suspenders for his cameo in The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
The Radio Nova host will make his debut in the horror musical tomorrow at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre in Dublin.
Ahead of his stage performance PJ, 47, told us: “Bar having a broken ankle, I’d say I’ll feel fine.
“There will be no video evidence that it ever happened, if I get my way. Maybe one photograph, highly edited and sweating.”
The comedian laughed off the suggestion he’s been practising by wearing women’s knickers at home.
He joked: “No, definitely not. I’m getting through this the same way I get through everything and pretending it’s not happening at all until it’s too late.
“And then hoping the world won’t end. I never prepared for any other shows – why would I start now?”
He added: “I love anything Halloweeny and I love all the oddness and the campness of it and crazy characters.
“And of course everyone loves The Time Warp, anyone who’s ever lived through Halloween loves The Time Warp, so it’s great.”
PJ, best known for his range of hilarious characters in the RTE sketch show Naked Camera, admitted he’d never seen the musical live.
The dad-of-two added: “That’s kind of a bit of a mind blower...
“Like the first time you see it live you’re standing in the wings in a pair of fishnets and heels waiting to go on.”
And he said he surprised himself by agreeing to perform in a musical, since he’s determined he’ll never compete on Dancing with the Stars.
He added: “This is the thing I’ve always said, I’ll never dance in public.
“I’ll never do Dancing with the Stars because I would hurt myself and embarrass myself.
“I’d be ridiculous, I’d look stupid. It’s the one thing I can’t do to myself. And now I’m doing the Rocky Horror Show.
“So at least it’s one night only and there’s no public vote.
“I’m really a Frankenstein’s monster in the Frank-n-furter’s monsters show.”
The Rocky Horror Picture Show runs from January 15 to January 19.
