Cauley’s pleasure and pain

-

LUTON goal hero Cauley Woodrow experienced the agony and ecstasy of the Cup.

The agony was a broken hand suffered in a collision with Everton defender James Tarkowski. The ecstasy arrived with the late winning goal.

He said: “Tarkowski fell on me accidently and I felt a crack in the hand. I was in a bit of shock for a while.”

Hatters boss Rob Edwards added: “He will be pleased tonight but is in a bit of pain.”

On their second win at Goodison Park in a season he added: “We are playing against Everton at Goodison Park. We were always going to play a strong team. The big celebration at the end was also that we didn’t need a replay.

“We are pleased to be in the next round. It’s a competition we really value and want to progress in.”

Former Everton star Ross Barkley was constantly booed by the home fans.

Edwards said: “I thought Ross dealt with it very well. Sometimes in football there is a pantomime villain. He dealt with it all well. It’s still his club and he loves it.”

Luton’s four goals in the two games at Goodison have been from set-pieces. “It shows the value of set pieces,” added Edwards.

“The first goal came from Alfie (Doughty) who has a really dangerous left foot.”

Disappointed Everton boss Sean Dyche whose first-year anniversary in charge arrives on Tuesday admitted: “A lot going on in that year and still is. The ups, the downs, the off the field, it’s a massive challenge without a doubt.

“Is it my toughest challenge? To bring it together is tough.

“Lots of voices, the chairman sadly passed, the owners changing, not enough money to get players. Lots of work done, lots to do. I am under no illusions. At the end of the day the fans don’t really care about all that it’s about winning matches.

“It’s our job to match the fans’ expectancy.”
