Legend’s tribute to Republic kitman on his 100th birthday
ROY Keane made an unexpected appearance at Charlie O’leary’s 100th birthday bash – and jokingly accused the former Ireland kitman of favouring Dublin players over him.
It was a case of one Irish soccer legend ribbing another when Keano popped up on a video link to congratulate Charlie on reaching his full century.
The former Ireland and Man Utd captain said: “Sorry I can’t make your function. I hope you have a great night, Charlie.
“You are a good man. Some great memories working with you.”
There were howls of laughter when he added: “You were always very slow to give me my kit and always looking after the Dublin lads first. I won’t hold that against you.
“Hope you and your family are good, Charlie. Hope you have a great night.
“You deserve it. You have been a great servant to Irish football, and I have some fond memories of you, Charlie. Some good days we had.”
TOURNAMENTS
Charlie O’leary was always by Jack Charlton’s side when the Republic qualified for major tournaments in the late 80s and early 90s.
He was also an important part of Mick Mccarthy’s backroom staff before retiring in 2000, with Charlton saying at the time: “They haven’t gone and got rid of him, have they?
“I don’t think people like Charlie should ever retire. It’s become a way of life to him.”
Paul Mcgrath remained in contact with O’leary and visited his close friend shortly before Christmas. He took to X (formerly Twitter) during the week to wish his former kitman well.
“Happy 100th birthday to a great friend over the years who looked away a few times and kept me out of trouble with Jack. Love you Charlie.”
The FAI also sent Charlie a birthday message, writing: “Happy 100th Birthday! Today we celebrate a very special milestone, as former Ireland Men’s Senior Team kitman Charlie O’leary turns 100!”
