Fundraiser hits the high notes

- Until next week, Kev

Stopping prostate cancer being a killer has become my No 1 mission (outside of caring for my family) since my diagnosis.

I have done whatever I can to raise awareness and funds for Prostate Cancer UK, however I am frequently humbled when friends come to me with ideas to help my aims.

Last week, longterm friends from work, Geoff and Mark, brought their respective bands Prime Numbers and Risk Assessment (you would never guess they both work in finance with band names like that!) together at the Tokenhouse Pub in London for a benefit gig. About six years ago they did this as a one-off but it was so successful that last week’s was their fourth and as ever the pub was rocking all evening.

It would be easy to think that all they did was turn up and play, but there was so much more involved. Getting both sets of band members and all their equipment to central London was in itself a challenge. There were also extra rehearsals because on top of their own bands, Geoff and Mark put together an extra outfit called Men United to bash out some great songs.

You would never have guessed that they don’t play together all the time as the quality of the music was amazing and it culminated with me on the stage joining in their amended rendition of The Proclaimers’ I’m Gonna Be (500 miles).

When someone does something for a cause that matters to me it brings a warm feeling and helps fan my belief that what I am doing is worthy of dedicating my time to. It spurs me on to do more, so thank you Geoff, Mark and all the great musicians who gave their time and energy.

I know they felt great too when thousands of pounds were raised from their efforts.

If there is someone who you can help out by getting involved with them and their project, there has never been a better time to step up to the plate.

The bands managed to raise thousands of pounds for the cause
