Final whistle for David’s youth football series

DAVID Beckham’s documentary Save Our Squad has been kicked into touch by Disney bosses, despite hopes of making it a long-term fixture.

In the series, Becks mentored a beleaguered under-14 side from the East London league where his incredible career began.

Before the former England captain arrived to try and save them from relegation, Westward Boys had not won a game all season.

But the heartwarming four-part show, which aired in 2022, did not pull in a big enough crowd – and now Disney has blown the final whistle on it.

A source said: “The bosses at Disney were thrilled to sign David for Save Our Squad. They felt it was a real coup.

“While the documentary was only commissioned for one series, they hoped to continue it, and film more as new kids came through the squad. They wanted to replicate the success of Freddie Flintoff’s Field of Dreams for the BBC. But unfortunately, they didn’t get the ratings so they decided to stop after the one series.” In Freddie’s show, which also aired in 2022, the England cricket legend could be seen coaching youngsters in a bid to create his own team. A second series is in the pipeline but has been delayed since Freddie, 46, was injured in a horrific car crash while filming Top Gear in December 2022. Last year, Manchester Utd legend Becks, 48, drew in millions of viewers with his Netflix documentary, Beckham.

He and wife Victoria have since poked fun at the hilarious scenes filmed between them, in which he urged her to be honest about her dad’s Rolls-royce.

This year, the couple will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary, and Victoria’s 50th birthday. A source last night insisted that Save Our Squad was only commissioned for a single series. A spokeswoman for Disney declined to comment.
