Kylie’s a risk taker
KYLIE is an incredible artist, and you can’t deny her stoical and tempered approach to the world of showbiz over these last 40 years.
I’ve always admired her tenacity in the flea bitten music industry and she’s so normal and chatty in interviews, you’d never think it was Kylie, the KYLIE, if that makes sense.
She’s done it though, she achieved ‘living icon’ status – the ultimate pintsized pop star with a big bite. No other 55-year-old woman looks like her, sounds like her or can sing like her.
Kylie, to my mind should never retire, a bit like The Rolling Stones. I hope she gathers moss like Jagger, Keith and Ronnie and keeps on rollin’.
Few female solo artists have reached that pedestal of living icon status and have more mileage to keep going... Madonna, Dolly, Cher, Diana Ross and Celine Dion.
No matter what life throws at Kylie; from breakups to slithery boyfriends to chart flops to a raw deal with cancer, she trumps them all and comes out on top! Youthful, charming and with a steely determination to stick her tongue out in a cut throat industry that once laughed at her and called her a joke. To my mind Kylie is officially in her third imperial phase. The first phase came when she started racking up hits with Stock, Aiken and Waterman at the tail end of the 80s.
Next up was her spectacular career revival with chart topper Spinning Around in 2000. Now, 24 years on, her 16th Studio album Tension took a risk with a new sound.
But Kyles likes risk… think of her dalliance with wildman rockstar Michael Hutchence when she traded her blonde curls for flame red pillbox pixie cuts and latex hot pants. The switch was undeniable.. Kylie is a chameleon. Her wish to never retire stems from her dogfight in the music industry. She was never accepted and had to fight for her place at the table. Let’s hope Kylie listens to her gut and doesn’t retire gracefully any time soon or fade into obscurity. Instead her love of a good song will ensure she remains the trendsetter she’s always been proving age is no barrier.
