CHARLIE Bird has given a heartbreaking interview – admitting: “I live each day as if it might be my last.”

The retired RTE newsman, 74, used his voice computer to give an update on his battle with motor neurone disease.

Brave Charlie was a guest on the Brendan O’connor radio show on RTE One where he said his outlook has altered since his diagnosis in 2021.

He said: “My view on life has completely changed. Live every day as if it was your last and always extend the hand of friendship.

“Every one of us will pass, so I want to extend the hand of friendship to anyone who is in a dark place.”

The former broadcaster admitted “death is around the corner” as he looked back on his life and played some of his favourite tracks. He described his wife Claire as the love of his life and spoke of his career highlights – and the moment Bruce Springsteen gave him a shout out.

Courageous Charlie said: “I have a terminal illness and I know my death is just around the corner. I am not afraid of dying.

“I have had a great life. As RTE’S chief news correspondent, I got to work on the biggest stories both at home and abroad.

“I feel very privileged that my career in journalism took me to all these places.”

Charlie also revealed how MND has affected his mobility and he now uses a wheelchair. He said: “Unfortunately, I can’t leave the house anymore and we’re waiting for a wheelchairfriendly car now which Claire is picking up next week. “The mobility in my legs went three weeks ago, and to be honest, it was the worst feeling not being able to walk any more. “Previous to that, I was able to get into our car, but that is not possible anymore.” He added: “We love the pier in Dun Laoghaire. That is my goal for next week, to meet my friends and walk the pier.” Charlie praised his “wonderful family” for their support and his wife Claire who “looks after me around the clock”. He concluded with a tribute to his dog Tiger, admitting: “His love is unconditional. I would be lost without him.”
