England rugby fan fumes as wife’s team has luck of the Irish

- BY SIOBHAN O’CONNOR

RUGBY fan Chris Collins has BARRED his wife Diane from going to matches with him – claiming she’s his “unlucky mascot”.

The London-born England supporter, who moved to Dublin 17 years ago, insists his team always get hammered when his other half attends games.

Ahead of Ireland’s crunch clash with England at Twickenham next weekend, Chris quipped: “Every time we go to the Aviva England always lose.

“So she’s barred now. I call her my nemesis when it comes to rugby.”

Ireland wrecked England’s Grand Slam hopes in 2017, ending their record run of victories with a dramatic 13-7 win in Dublin.

Rugby rivals Diane and Chris wore their team’s jerseys in the stands at the Aviva as they cheered the opposing players on.

Recalling the crushing defeat, Chris said: “It was just bonkers, I was crying and Diane was laughing.

“I didn’t talk to her all the way home.”

Reigning champs Ireland will have to wait until their March 16 meeting with Scotland to see if they can bag a second consecutive Grand Slam.

But the Six Nations championship itself could already be won by then if they defeat England at Twickenham in round four next weekend. Diane revealed their seven-year-old son Jake wants both teams to win next Saturday. She said: “Jake usually wears both colours and doesn’t want mammy and daddy arguing. “He wants peace and harmony, he even said about the upcoming match ‘Mammy what’s going to happen, can you both win?’” Adding that it’s all a bit of friendly friction, she said: “The two matches I went to, England were annihilated, I was laughing my head off. “Our local pub Pebble Beach would nearly pay Chris to come down and watch an England match. “When I was pregnant the manager there asked me to get my man down to the pub, they had a sign reserved for us at the bar.

“Chris has massive respect for the Irish team and supports them when England aren’t playing.

“There are winners and losers but with rugby it’s a gentleman’s sport.

“Everybody can shake hands at the end of it.”

Agreeing with his spouse, Chris added: “Once the red and white and the green are off, we’re back to slippers, Guinness and black pudding sandwiches.”
