STREEP’S ABBA FAB AS MOVIE MOTHER..
Musical star is fans’ favourite big screen mum
MAMMA Mia’s Donna Sheridan has topped a poll of favourite big screen mothers – ahead of Maria von Trapp in The Sound of Music
The fictional matriarch, played by Meryl Streep in the hit movie inspired by the songs of ABBA, won 24% of the vote in a poll conducted for ITV. Streep, 74, won praise for her role as the owner of the Bella Donna hotel on the Greek island of Kalokairi in the 2008 musical flick. Morticia Addams, played by Anjelica Huston, 72, in the 1993 classic Addams Family Values, was a close second with 23% of the vote. In joint third place were Linda Hamilton, 67, as Sarah Connor in Terminator 2 and Miss Honey played by 58-year-old Embeth Davidtz in Matilda, both on 22% of the
public vote. Julie Andrews, 88, and her iconic role as singing nun-turned-mum Maria von Trapp came next followed by Queen Ramona, played by 65-year-old
Angela Bassett in Black Panther. And the star turn of Oprah Winfrey, 70, as the strong and fierce Sofia from The Color Purple also polled in the top 10.
That’s along with NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson played by Taraji P Henson, 53, in Hidden Figures.
Sally Field, 77, is the only actor to appear twice in the list for her portrayals of Mrs Gump in Forrest Gump (18%) and Miranda Hillard (16%) in the iconic 1993 film Mrs Doubtfire.
Nine in 10 of the 2,000 people surveyed said their mammy is the most important person in their lives, with four in 10 speaking to them every day.
Two thirds said their mother is their hero and the “heart of the family”.
