Simple acts mean more to me than Hallmark Day

- HONEST Claudia Winkleman

CLAUDIA Winkleman shocked mammies everywhere this week by slagging off Mother’s Day and revealing she’s not a “massive fan”.

I’m with the Traitors host on this – it’s a commercialised day where the necessity to conform is the main objective.

We’ve only just said goodbye to Valentine’s and the shelves are lined with the mandatory Mother’s Day cards.

It’s a forced day, and just so predictable.

Mum-of-three Claudia told the Dish podcast: “I have quite a strong view on Mother’s Day, I can’t stand it.”

She added that she’s banned her kids from bringing her breakfast in bed, but they can unload the dishwasher any other day of the year.

My kids are young and impressionable and have been told by their teacher to spoil mammy on the special day.

I get up before my kids at 6am to have peace before the madness ensues.

So in my house on Mother’s Day I have to get back under the duvet so they can serve me the obligatory breakfast in bed. It was really cute last year, the cold rashers, the bread cut in hunks and lathered with jam. I do intermittent fasting so I had to pretend to salivate over the fare.

I loved how they handpicked daisies, that was a wonderful touch.

Bless their hearts, the kindness and their efforts were not lost on me.

My partner is warned every year not to buy me a cheap bunch of petrol station flowers.

I’m not a curmudgeon, but it’s the nature of days like this that makes me feel a bit queasy. My own mam cringes at the thoughts of being out on Mother’s Day for lunch almost like a token of affection prescribed by our consumerist society.

There are 364 other days of the year where mammies should be adored.

It’s better to get waited on hand and foot when we really need it, and this week this happened for me when I had the vomiting bug.

The girls carried up cups of water in their little Stitch and Lilo plastic glasses as I couldn’t stomach food. They then created get well soon cards off their own bat just out of love.

That meant more to me than a shop-bought card on a ‘Hallmark Day’.

It’s the nature of days like this that makes me feel a bit queasy
