Sligo fume over Pohls challenge

- BY DAVID GOULDEN

SHAMROCK ROVERS continue their search for a first league win of the year after they could only manage a stalemate at The Showgrounds.

Hoops goalkeeper Leon Pohls may have been fortunate to see out what was a pulsating game after he crashed into Sligo’s Simon Power outside his penalty area in the second half.

Referee Rob Hennessy was jeered off at the end after he decided to show the German yellow and not red.

Both Pohls and his opposite number Ed Mcginty were on top in this one, the latter in particular pulling off several impressive stops.

Loanee Mcginty denied Aaron Greene early on, while Power struck the outside of Pohls’ post just 60 seconds later.

Sligo’s Ellis Chapman and Fabrice Hartmann both went close towards the end of the half.

Chapman scuppered a glorious chance to net what would have been the winner early in the second half but the former Cheltenham attacker could only fire straight at Dan Cleary on the Hoops’ goalline.

With plenty of possession for a period in the second half, the visitors looked to turn the screw although Mcginty was suitably protected by the wellmarshalled rearguard in front of him.

He was called into action in the 72nd minute when he travelled from his line to fall at the feet of Sligo man Johnny Kenny after Burke had scooped the ball into the path of the substitute.

Sligo were left exasperated two minutes later when Pohls crashed into the surging Power.

Hennessy decided a Shamrock Rovers defender was covering, opting to flash a yellow card at the keeper when the crowd bayed for red.

LONGFORD TOWN lost 2-0 at home to Cork City in the First Division last night.
