Today presenter Maura has one eye on Joe show

TV presenter Maura Derrane has admitted she wouldn’t mind a crack at Joe Duffy’s radio slot if it becomes available.

The Today show host had her radio debut recently filling in on the Nine O’clock show on RTE Radio One and admitted she’d got the bug.

She said: “When I did the two weeks I loved it. I love my job in Cork, but I always want to put my foot in radio.

“I spoke to RTE about it and I will be doing more bits when I finish the Today Show for the summer.”

Asked if she was eyeing up Joe Duffy’s slot amid rumours around his contract, the mum-of-one replied: “I’d love to try it out.

“The ideal for me would be to combine radio and TV. I just feel that when you love broadcasting it’s great to have a new challenge.

“I’ve done TV for a long time and I’d love a new challenge. I’ll jump in wherever they want me.”

Maura, 53, said she’s pared back her telly wardrobe because she finds too many clothes “overwhelming”. The RTE star is embracing the sustainability trend and refreshing vintage outfits to make them last longer.

She told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “This year what I’ve done is bought less clothes for the show.

“I’ve gone back through all my old wardrobe and started pulling a lot of stuff to rewear and looking at pieces that match.

“Maybe a little slip dress I used to wear, I’d wear a jacket over a dress from a few seasons [ago].

“I find it’s the overwhelming nature of too many clothes. Really, they all end up in these piles.

“I’m not saying I’m the most sustainable person because I’m not, but if we all made a little bit of effort it would make a huge difference.”

Maura, who co-hosts the afternoon show with Daithi O Se, said people are now kinder in critiquing her on-screen appearance.

She said: “The landscape has changed, nobody bats an eyelid if you wear something twice. Our show is a sustainable show now.”
