Owls’ bid to survive Rohls on

- HAPPY WEDNESDAYS: By LINDSAY SUTTON

Musaba 22, Ugbo 50, Windass 69

DUTCHMAN Anthony Musaba led the way towards safety with the vital opening goal that kept Danny Rohl’s Owls on course to stay in the Championship.

And when Ike Ugbo cracked home five minutes after the break, the 31,000 Wednesday fans were singing: “We are staying up, we are staying up!”

The icing on the Hillsborough cake came when Josh Windass kept his cool to side-foot in the Owls’ third.

Other results mean they still need one point at Sunderland next weekend to make sure of an amazing survival story, when all looked lost before Rohl took over after 13 games without a single win.

Rohl praised his team’s mindset but added: “We are over the line but not safe.

“We need a point to be sure, but we go there seeking three points. It is not a time to celebrate or be lazy, and my players know this.”

Baggies boss Carlos Corberan said: “We wanted a reaction at half-time and got it, but then they scored their second goal and our belief suffered.”

West Brom look pretty certain of a play-off position, but it was a Wednesday survival story that topped the bill.

Musaba played a key role throughout. The 23-year-old winger had watched Windass denied by Baggies’ keeper Alex Palmer, but grabbed his chance as the ball ran loose.

Yet the Baggies had more shots on goal than the Owls, but failed to make the breakthrough.

Hotshot Michael Johnston hit a hard, low shot that was saved.

And Kyle Bartley looked set to score with a header but the ball hit team-mate Jed Wallace.
