Newbawn soapbox team are on a roll

-

DRIVING a jumbo breakfast roll vehicle, a soapbox team from South West Wexford won this year’s Red Bull Soapbox Race on Sunday in Cork, having completed the course in 37 seconds.

The Newbawn soapbox car racers proved they hand’t bitten off more than they could chew when they competed in the race on the vertical drop that is St Patrick’s Hill, Cork. The local team was the only team from County Wexford competing in the race. They were among the 68 entries that made it through to compete in the hope of impressing the judges and the crowd when they launched themselves and their soapbox - Jumbo Breakfast Roll, complete with fired egg - down a specially constructed course lined with protective hay bales, down St Patrick’s Hill as part of the race.

The Jumbo Breakfast Roll team of Nigel Molloy, Myles Stamp, (both of whom hail from Gusserane), Mark Culleton from Campile, Dwayne Dunne from New Ross and James Stafford from Clonmines, wowed the crowds when they sped down the challenging 350m course, in just 37 seconds, to take the Red Bull Soapbox Race title back to Wexford.

The friends know each other through their interest in motor sports and also through Mr Molloy’s auto factor business in Newbawn.

The crew who were known as ‘Jumbo Breakfast Roll’ are all members of the South East Motor Club in Wexford and are huge motorsport fans.
