Walk with Lions for local charities
Wexford Lions Club is hitting the highways and byways of the county to raise money for a variety of local community projects.
Their ‘Walk for Wexford’ takes place over the weekend of August 26 to August 28 and they are inviting the public to join them.
The sponsored walk has been the main fundraiser for Wexford Lions Club for over a decade and has evolved over the years into three quite different routes over the course of a weekend.
The first, on Friday, August 26, starts at 10pm at the Winning Post, Curracloe and leads walkers through the Raven Forest.
On Saturday, August 27, walkers will set off at 10am from the Forestry Carpark (near the Regal Lodge), taking in the Three Rocks, the Quarry and some of the Forestry Road. This is the most challenging walk of the weekend.
The final walk on Sunday again starts at 10am but at medieval Tintern Abbey, traversing through the famous Colclough’s Walled Garden and on to Bannow Bay before returning to the Abbey. Each walk will take approximately 2 and a half hours and all are suitable for beginners as well as the more seasoned walker. Walkers can participate in all three walks or just attend one to suit their weekend plans.
President Dan Redmond said: Without the funds raised from the sponsored Walk for Wexford, we as a Club would be unable to deliver a number of the services we currently provide in the local community.’
District Governor Paul Allen said: ‘A fundamental principle of Lions Clubs is that all overheads and administration costs are paid by members so that every cent collected can go directly to projects and causes.’
Funds from the Walk for Wexford will assist with a respite weekend for carers in October, provide equipment to local community groups, go toward the Christmas Hamper Appeal and assist in funding a variety of other projects over the next year.
Sponsorship cards are available from club members and at Westgate Design, Main Street.
Walkers are advised to wear suitable footwear and, if attending the night time walk at the Raven, to have a torch. The Walk for Wexford is supported by Wexford Civil Defence and Equine Search & Rescue.
