Nancy Martin had a warm, friendly nature

-

NANCY MARTIN, who passed away aged 83 on August 2 after a short illness, was a woman whose company brightened up dull days and who was always a joy to be around.

Nancy was born on December 10, 1932. She was the eldest child of the late Nancy and Patrick Richardson of No 1 Fair Green, New Ross.

Nancy attended the local national school as a young child and worked at various jobs, including at Driver Harris, as a young woman.

Nancy liked to attend dances at the local badminton hall with her friends, where she met the love of her life and best friend, her late husband Jimmy.

They both enjoyed going to the cinema and going for strolls through the countryside.

Nancy suffered from pleurisy whe she was 18 and spent six months convalescing at Brownswood sanatorium in Enniscorthy.

Jimmy, accompanied by Nancy’s sister May, cycled every Sunday to see her in Enniscorthy in all kinds of weather. Nancy and Jimmy married on November 10, 1952, at St Mary & St Michael’s Parish Church at 8 a.m.

They moved to the family home at 21 Ard Na Greine, New Ross, where they reared nine children, namely, Margie, Anne, Mary, Patricia, Tommy, Bernie, Jimmy, Tracy and Anthony.

Nancy loved to travel and made frequent visits to her eldest daughter Margie’s home in London. Nancy also visited the shrines at Lourdes, Knock and Fatima.

She celebrated her 80th birthday in Fatima with her two daughters and son Jimmy. Nancy was a keen member of the Old Folks Club where she enjoyed many nights meeting up with old friends to play pongo. She always looked forward to the annual Christmas party.

Nancy was a regular church-goer and attended mass weekly in the Augustinian Church up until its closure last Christmas. She never missed the EWTN glocal Catholic TV network, channel for the Angelus and the rosary between noon and 1 p.m.

In her latter years she enjoyed watching TV, especially comedies and all types of sport.

She could usually be found sitting in her favourite armchair watching TV or chatting on her mobile phone.

Nancy was a very sociable person and loved nothing more than to be surrounded by her family and friends.

Her popular, caring and friendly nature was in evidence by the very large crowd in attendance at both her removal and her funeral Mass at St Mary & St Michael’s Parish Church and by the sea of flowers laid on her grave at St Stephen’s Cemetery.

Nancy will be sadly missed by her children; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sons-inlaw; daughter-in-law; brothers; sisters; brothers-in-law; sisters-in-law; nieces; nephews; neighbours and friends.

May she rest in peace.
