Maura Power was a lady and a devoted mother

-

MAURA POWER was a gentle, easy going lady who was devoted to her family and to her religion.

Late of Newtown, Fethard on Sea, Maura died on August 6 aged 77 surrounded by her loving family. She is survived by her husband Watty; children, John, James and Patricia; grandchildren, Cushla, Jamie and Grace.

Born on December 6, 1938, Maura grew up in Carrig on Bannow, the youngest daughter of James and Elizabeth Kelly in a family of five. She attended national school in Carrig on Bannow and her talent for sewing and knitting was evident from a young age. Maura married Watty and they were married when she was in her thirties. Family was the most important thing in Maura’s life and she adored her children, John, James and Patricia.

A woman of great faith, she was involved in the Legion of Mary and was very involved in prayer meetings in her community. Padre Pio was a particular comfort to her. Maura raised her family at Newtown. Unlike Watty, who enjoyed the occasional drink and smoked, Maura never smoke or drank and they were living proof that opposite’s attract. A homebird by nature, she enjoyed gardening and could often be found tending to her hydrangeas in her apron. She enjoyed knitting clothes for her family and enjoyed family trips to the beach. Maura was a member of the ICA and made friends within the local organisation.

Maura suffered from ill health in recent times and passed away on August 6 at Wexford General Hospital after a short illness. A huge crowd attended her funeral mass at St Aidan’s Church, Poulfur where beautiful music was played in memory of a beautiful lady. Maura’s burial took place afterwards in the new cemetery.

Maura is dearly missed by her husband Watty; children, John, James and Patricia; grandchildren, Cushla, Jamie and Grace; sibling; nephews; nieces; son-in-law David Murphy; and daughters-in-law Trish Nolan and Mandy O’Leary.

May she rest in peace.
