Woman is ‘furious’ over dismissal of flyover story

- BY ESTHER HAYDEN

A FURIOUS New Ross woman has lashed out against councillors from Piltown and New Ross for dismissing reports of rocks being thrown over the flyover at Milltown as fabrication.

The woman who didn’t want to be named said that around three months ago her 36-year-old son was travelling from Waterford to New Ross along the N25 when he hit two rocks under the flyover which she said had obviously been thrown off the bridge at some stage prior to that.

‘It happened at 1am in the morning when he was coming home. We rang the gardai in New Ross and they told us that the area was covered by Thomastown gardai so we rang them as well to report it.

‘We also reported that matter to Deputy Bobby Aylward and to Kilkenny County Council.

‘My son had to claim off his insurance because of the amount of damage and they paid out €1,700 and gave him a rental car for a week. The suspension on the car was damaged. Both my sons now travel to Mullinivat to go to Waterford rather than travel along the N25. ‘It was very embarrassing to read in the paper on Tuesday that the councillors, officials and gardai are dismissing these serious incidents.

‘I was furious when I read it. I know an elderly woman who was travelling along that road and her car was hit by a rick causing her car to spin around. She was lucky to keep control of it.

‘Another woman experienced a similar incident and she had a baby in the back seat.

‘ These are the people we are voting for and they are dismissing what is happening to people. When my son rang me that night I thought he was after been in a serious accident. He said he never saw the two rocks on the road until he hit them. His two tyres were damaged as well as his suspension.

‘I’d love to get those councillors and tell them that it’s not lies or urban legends.

‘Bobby Alyward told us that Kilkenny County Council should compensate us for the damage but when we rang we were told that they didn’t put the stones there but neither did we.

‘We are paying our road tax and insurance and yet this is their attitude. But after we reported it there were people from the council out there clearing it and the trees were cut down.’ To celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the club, Duncannon FC has produced a book called ‘Soccer by the Sea’ which chronicles the events that have shaped the club and charts its development and achievements over those 40 years.

The 244 page publication is a limited edition book packed with local interest stories and photographs and will be on sale locally and from the club for a very reasonable €10.

It will be launched on Friday, October 14, in the Sláinte Bar, Ramsgrange, at 9 p.m. by John Delaney, Chief Executive of the Football Association of Ireland.

All are invited to attend this nostalgic night of celebration and share in the many memories of forty great years of soccer in Duncannon. Admission is free.
