THE Lake Region fun run and walk in aid of the Hope Cancer Support Centre Enniscorthy took place on Sunday in glorious sunshine on the splendid grounds of JFK Arboretum.
There was a huge turn out on the day for this community spirited family fun charity event. George Carpendale from the Lake Region charities committee got proceedings under way with a kiddies dash. Everyone was well entertained and warmed up by local DJ and kids entertainer Liam Sharkey, John Reilly and their crew. More than 100 runners competed in the four mile race with local business woman Anna Furlong sounding the hooter to set them on their way. The race was timed by volunteers of the United Striders Athletic Club under the supervision of Catherine Ronan. The winner of the men’s race was John McGrath followed by Martin Mizgajski, Willie Foley and Ted Flannelly. The winner of the women’s race was Helen Stafford followed by Sonia Byrne, Beth O’Connor and Ellie Quinn. More than 270 walkers then took off for the two mile walk (one lap) around the scenic grounds of JFK Park. There was a bake off on the day which was won by Anne Kent. A few words of thanks were said by Director of Operations at Lake Region Medical Eddie Kiely, with some presentations made to people for their help and support. All proceeds from the day will go directly to the Hope Centre.
