Tintern Review published

- BY EMILY OSBORN

THIS year’s Tintern Review weaves together a wonderful tapestry of local life in the Tintern community over the past year.

Edited by Billy Downes, the 50 page magazine is in local shops now. It covers all the social and sporting events in the community over the past year, along with special segments on local people.

The annual magazine begins with a message from Mr Downes outlining what lies in store for the reader. The magazine carries notices of baptisms, marriages and deaths within local parishes and there is a segment complete with pictures of local residents who are aged over 90. Also featured are significant events in history since the 1900s, as well as more current events from the past year, including Gusseane O’Rahilly’s triumph in the county football final.

An article entitled ‘A life well lived’ tells the stories of some past citizens of the area. Many local stories are also featured such as sporting events, fundraisers, local school events, visits made to the area by public figures (including Santa Claus) and charity events. Many stunning photographs are also included. There is a two page spread on the making of a documentary on the St Kearns explosion in October 1920, with excellent pictures of the actors and from the shoots.

The magazine includes an article on Mary Finn’s charitable journey to Chernobyl, Dick Byrne and his involvement with Ballycullane Ploughing Club and Boley Tug-of-War Club which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2015. There is also a fascinating article on Boley man James Byrne and the life he led in fighing for Irish freedom. The paper highlights the tight-knit Tintern community spirit in wonderful colour and detail. It is available to buy in shops and newsagents for €7 and would make an ideal gift for relatives living abroad to keep them in contact with the events, big and small, happening in their area of Tintern. THE BENEFIT of the Probation Act was applied in the case of a 21-year-old man who smashed two shop windows at O’Neill’s shop in New Ross’s Wexford Street.

The judge was assured that Dillion Egan from 24 Nunnery Lane, New Ross had since come up with the €1,370 compensation due, with the final payment of €220 produced at the District Court sitting in Wexford.

The case dated back to May 2015 and solicitor Dermot Davis pointed out that the defendant had been in no trouble since.
