A large scale operation was launched after the woman was reported missing with two Irish coastguard helicopters, lifeboats, coastguard ground crews and a port authority vessel assisting with the rescue alongside officers from Dyfed Police and the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The UK Coastguard which co-ordinated the search was contacted shortly after 8.15 am on Friday by Irish Ferries which reported that a female passenger was missing and was believed to have gone overboard from the ‘Isle of Inishmore’ ferry in the Pembroke channel.

A Mayday relay call was issued to all vessels passing through the area. Conditions for the search were described as favourable.

The search operation ended some hours later after the body of the female was recovered from the water. Dyfed Powys polics said a body was located in the Lawrenny area of Pembrokeshire but had not been formally identified.

It is believed the woman went missing at around 3 am on Friday morning near Pembroke. The ferry had left Pembroke on Thursday night and the alarm was raised at 8.15 on Friday.

The ferry was en route to Rosslare Harbour from Pembroke.
