Tintern walkway opened

- BY DAVID LOOBY

A WALKWAY connecting connecting Cleggs, Saltmills, with Tintern Abbey, which will form part of an international Eurovelo 1 cycle route next year, has been officially opened after it was resurfaced in the autumn.

On Sunday, December 4, the chairman of New Ross Municipal District, Cllr Michael Whelan officially opened the surfacing of the Brickfield Lane.

Cllr Whelan thanked the staff for their work on the project and spoke of his pride in officially opening the lane. He said he looked forward to the continuing development of Trails in Tintern and encouraged people from the area and tourists to visit what is a gem in terms of its historic significance and beauty. Wexford County Council ( WCC) provided funding to the Tintern Trails community group to enable them to surface this greenfield trail. This resulted, following discussions between WCC Cycling Officer - Frank Burke and some of the members of the Tintern Trails group, namely Pat Caulfield and David Bawden, in the possibility of bringing the proposed Eurovelo 1 cycle route through Tintern Abbey grounds and the possibility of developing the grass track that links the village with Tintern Abbey.

Representatives of the Tintern Trails group met with and discussed the possibilities and concerns of the landowners along the Brickfield lane. Once all concerns were dealt with, funding was provided and works went ahead.

Mr Burke acknowledged the outstanding contribution made by Mr Caulfield, highlighting that he was instrumental in coordinating the project and also thanked his co-workers, namely Seamus Cullen, John Paul Wickham, Garrett Murphy and Jim Cullen, for all their work in getting this community work completed in such a timely fashion.

Mr Burke thanked the landowners along Brickfield Lane namely the Falkentahl Family, Vivian and Anne Tubritt, Thomas and Lorraine Walsh and James Barron.

Mr Burke said: ‘Community work like this is so important to the community and believe it or not, the Brickfield Lane will have a European context next year, when WCC promote the Eurovelo 1 cycle route through Wexford, as this will be an integral part of the route’.

He also thanked New Ross District Director Eamonn Hore for his support of the project and for making funding available to the walking trail group.
