Mannton justifies his high reputation

- BRENDAN FURLONG in Woodlands

MANNTON MANOR, who started out with impressive form, justified his high reputation by collecting the Loch Garman Cup after two excellent days of coursing in the 88th annual Loch Garman Cup meeting of Wexford and District Coursing Club held at Woodlands, Enniscorthy, on Monday and Tuesday of last week.

The Wicklow-owned dog of Pat Hore, who is formerly of Wexford town, which was nominated by his nephew, Pat Hore, started out as one of the favourites.

He ousted Winter Wish in the semi-final, setting up an anticipated final clash with the fancied Stephen’s Owen, owned by the Limerick syndicate of Sullivan-Grogan-McNamara-Meehan.

After what was a hugely impressive course in the final, Mannton Manor got up to hold off the challenge of Winter Wish, which was nominated by Richard Fortune.

Meanwhile, in the M. L. Hickey Stakes the Paddy Flannery and Declan Byrne-owned Clerihan Pockets, nominated by the Wexford Secretary, Des McCabe, had the honour of taking the cup with an excellent final course victory over Killucan Rose, owned by Kevin Carr of Westmeath and nominated by John Roche.

The Derby Trial Stakes produced an impressive winner in Cardinal Court, owned by Marian Beckett from Freshford, defeating J. Caffrey’s Janeys Fawn Boy in the final. Janey’s Fawn Boy from Cavan was under the watch of former Wexford under-age hurler and footballer, Tom ‘Gawny’ Walsh.

The Brian Matthews (Newry)Gadget Queen coursed impressively over the two days to go on to take the Lisloose Accord Oaks Trial Stakes, beating Pebbles Be Nice convincingly in the final. Derby Trial Stakes (32) final: M. Beckett’s Cardinal Court beat K.J. Caffrey’s Janneys Fawn Boy.
