‘Cop on’ and report flyover stone damage to us – sergeant

- BY DAVID LOOBY

GARDAÍ in Mooncoin are urging motorists whose vehicles are damaged on the N25 at Milltown bridge flyover to contact them urgently, if such incidents are actually happening.

Sergeant Catherine O’Gorman said gardaí are aware of posts on the New Ross Neighbourhood Watch Facebook page about vehicles getting damaged by rocks and stones in the vicinity of the flyover on the N25 at Glenmore, but nobody has been reporting these alleged incidents.

Sgt O’Gorman said: ‘ This raises its head on a regular basis but normally if a crime is committed people have the cop on to report it to us, otherwise it sounds like scaremongering. We absolutely encourage people to report this to their local garda station but reporting it on Facebook is not going to solve the crime.’

Sgt O’Gorman said there will be a stronger garda presence in the area following a serious incident on the N25 recently, in which a car was damaged after somebody placed road signs out in the middle of the main road.

On Tuesday last, at 11.30 p.m. gardaí attended the area following reports that items had been thrown onto the road. ‘What actually happened was that someone moved two traffic signs onto the road damaging the undercarriage and front bumper of a car. This happened late at night in the centre of the road and was very dangerous. Following this incident we will increase our garda traffic patrols in the area.’

Sgt O’Gorman said the last report gardaí have of an incident involving rocks and stones on the N25 under the flyover dates back to July 21, 2016, when a woman contacted gardaí about the issue. At the time she told gardaí that she was aware of the reports on Facebook, but had not had her car damaged by rocks at the flyover.
