ALDI STORE IS COMING TO GRAIG

-

PLANNING permission has been given for a new Aldi supermarket in Graiguenamanagh.

The discount supermarket had applied to Kilkenny County Council for permission to build a single storey supermarket including off licence with a gross floor area of 1,608 square metres on the former Cullen Steel site.

The development will consist of the demolition of the existing buildings currently located on site, associated signage, landscaping and upgrade works to the existing bridge and all ancillary site development works.

There will be 95 car parking spaces and access to the supermarket will be from Upper Main Street.

A decision on the application had been delayed after Kilkenny County Council requested further information from the German chain about the development and this, in turn, took several months to compile.

On Wednesday last Kilkenny County Council gave the development the green light subject to 29 planning conditions.

The news of the decision was welcomed by local councillor Peter ‘Chap’ Cleere. ‘ This is absolutely fantastic news that Aldi have gotten the thumbs up. There has been considerable interest and excitement in our area over the last couple of months regarding this application, and the overwhelming majority of people I have spoken to are in favour of this project going ahead. I had some people stop me on the street concerned that this project wasn’t going to go ahead, but the positive news is a major boost for the area.

‘Aldi coming to Graiguenamanagh will be a huge help to those who have to travel out of town to do their shopping meaning that more money will stay in Graiguenamanagh with shoppers in turn picking up extras in the town centre.

‘ This is very much a ‘win-win’ situation for Graiguenamanagh, as Aldi will be, as part of their planning conditions, making significant contributions to the access area around Well Lane, including new public lighting, tarmac and railings etc.

‘ The shopping choice of residents in Graig and its hinterland will be significantly enhanced and there are so many benefits associated with an Aldi store, including employment opportunities.

‘With the contracts for the construction of the new fire station in Graig signed last week with works expected to commence towards the end of March – and now news of Aldi’s planning permission approval, Graiguenamanagh has had a brilliant start to 2017.’
