THE LATE TOM CASHIN

The death occurred recently of Tom Cashin from ‘Knocknaree’, Tinnakilly, Rosbercon. He died on March 6 peacefully after a long life of 97 years. Born in nearby Shanbogh where he farmed in his young days, Tom became a multi-talented man who could turn his hand to many different occupation­s. He was a top class mechanic, salmon fisherman, carpenter and gardener.

Many the fine haul of salmon he and his crew took from the pond known as ‘The Linn Mhor’ upstream from the famous Pink Rock. He often made a fishing cot to use in that particular occupation showing his prowess as a carpenter. An avid follower of the Kilkenny hurlers he derived great satisfacti­on from their successes in recent times.

Tom built his own house in Tinnakilly when he married his wife, Josie Murphy, from Kilrush in Co Wexford. There they reared there family of four girls in happy surroundin­gs. Sadly Josie passed away almost five years ago to the day. In the intervenin­g years Tom himself became ill but battled away with great courage till he too passed away in the first week of March.

His remains lay in repose at Jamie Doyle’ Funeral Home in Rosbercon and Tom was laid to rest in Rosbercon cemetery after Requiem Mass on Tuesday, March 8. Tom is survived by his daughters, Elizabeth, Marie, Sheila and Claire, sons-in-law, grandchild­ren, nieces, nephews, and a large circle of friends and neighbours. CONCERT

The Vat Pack Drama Group from Mullinavat will present a Variety Concert on this coming Friday and Saturday, March 24/25. Come and join us for music, song and dance with two plays thrown in for good measure. The admission to the concert is €10

GREAT WAR

The Kilkenny Great War Committee commemorat­ing World War One, 1914-1918 are hosting an evening of song, stories, and poetry in the Rising Sun Mullinavat on Friday, March 31. In that World War one statistics show there were 12 killed from Rosbercon and 32 from Glenmore, 18 from Mullinavat, 21 from Slieverue, 41 from Kilmacow, and 33 from Mooncoin.

Included in the programme for the evening will be Larry Scallan’s, ‘From Bugle Call to Tolling Bell’ plus music by the Deenside Minstrels along with a host of guest readers. The venue for the event is the Rising Sun and admission is only €5 and there will be a monster raffle as well. Tickets are available from Fidelis at 087 9752556 or Séamus at 087 2866887.

FIRST EUCHARIST

On this coming Sunday, March 26, there will be First Eucharist Preparatio­n Mass in St David’s Church Mullinarri­gle at 9.30 a.m. Then on the following Sunday, April 2, the Mass will be held in the Church of the Assumption Rosbercon.
