It was a wise decision: the film had a lukewarm reception but the soundtrack was a major hit and ‘Wand’rin Star’ a number one for Marvin in the UK and Ireland. After three weeks it was replaced at the top in the UK by Simon and Garfunkel’s seminal ‘Bridge Over Troubled Waters’ but not before it had stopped the Beatles reaching number one with ‘Let It Be’, their final single before Paul McCartney’s announcement that he was leaving the band.
