Brosnan off to winning start

-

a bit of game intelligence and a lot of composure. You’re going nowhere kicking ten wides in a half of football, it’s as simple as that.

Something that would also help the plight of the Wexford town club is a referee who won’t give Lee Chin’s marker four or five cynical fouls before brandishing a card.

The county hurler is a real handful at full-forward and Pat Kehoe doesn’t like to pull out the yellow easily, but constant pulling on jersey and limbs needs to be stamped out early.

Brosnan took just ten seconds short of two minutes to open his Castletown championship account. He later added a second-half free in a quietly efficient debut. His side were 0-5 to nil ahead after eleven minutes.

Finally, after eight wides to start the game, Sarsfields notched their first score when Chin was dragged down yet again and John Bridges converted the free. Later in the half Chin had a goalbound shot blocked by Joe Gardiner.

However, given that territorially the contest was fairly even, it was somewhat shambolic that Sarsfields went in 1-8 to 0-1 behind after Colin Kennedy found the net at the second attempt in the 28th minute.

After a quiet start to the second period, Gardiner threw off his defensive responsibilities, latched onto Andy Merrigan’s crossfield pass and rattled past goalkeeper Eoin Healy.

From 2-9 to 0-1 behind, Sarsfields won a facile victory in the last 16 minutes, out-pointing Castletown 5-4. Eoin Roche did the bulk of the scoring by kicking four points, and Dylan Fulong also got one, while Pierce Maxwell, Robbie Brooks and Conor Carty picked off scores at the other end.

Castletown return to action on Friday night when they face St. Anne’s in St. Patrick’s Park, while Sarsfields need to bounce back quickly and have the chance to do just that against Shelmaliers in Innovate Wexford Park a day later.
