Adult learners create cakes for all tastes

-

An enjoyable international event took place in New Ross Adult Education Centre recently which saw students from nine differnt countries bake cakes synonymous with their native countries.

The event was promoted by Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board to celebrate Adult Learner’s Week and involved the English language students from the Monday evening class, cooking and speaking about a dessert, cake or other sweet dish that represents their country’s cooking tradition.

The students explained the recipe to each other and to a group of invited guests. Baking from the following countries were tasted and shared during the evening; Lithuania, Latvia, Russia, Poland, Spain, Greece, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

The guest of honour was Sean Sutton from The Bakehouse on South Street who was impressed by the variety and quality of the baking exhibits. The discussion revolved around the similarities and difference in the various European cuisines and the place of each dish in the tradition.

Sean also encouraged the students to explore the opportunities that exist in local markets and shops for quality, locally produced food.

The event was planned by Waterford and Wexford Education and Training Board English language Tutor Ingrid Arfa and Don Murphy WWETB Adult Literacy Organiser Wexford.

The participants were: Rudite Cirpone, Skaidra Daugintiene, Michal Kazubowski, Kamila Talaska, Paula Sienczak- Konieczko, Erika Szabo, Joalnta Buckute, Sebastian Godziszewski, Katarzyna Skrobich, Gina Cirpaciu, Ingrid Arfa, Sean Sutton, Don Murphy, Patricia Garcia Herrera Fernandez, and Panayota Kyriakidou.
