ART STUDENTS LOOK ‘BEYOND THESE WALLS’
WEXFORD Arts Centre in partnership with Wexford Campus School of Art and Design at IT Carlow is hosting the BA (Hons) Fine Art Graduate Exhibiton entitled Beyond These Walls which will run until June 10.
The show which was officially opened by the artist Kathy Prendergast, is the culmination of four years of study and practice by the students who are now embarking on their professional careers.
It showcases their ability to create strong visual work exploring themes and issues at the core of everyday life.
Beyond These Walls features painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and sculpture and examines topics including cultural identity and gender, diaspora and war and the physical body.
Some works convey the simple enjoyment that can result from engaging in a creative process. Inspired by geometric forms and repetition, a series of paper sculptures explore the relationship between light, surface and material, blurring our perception of what we think we should see.
A series of charcoal line drawings touch upon the hidden activity of the subconscious and in doing so seem to form an abstract language. An ice sculpture by Patrica Kent called ‘Suspended in Time’ melts and drips to reveal flowers frozen inside.
Capturing domestic scenes and mundane but extraordinary aspects of contemporary life, Beyond These Walls reflects a tangible human world, conscious of its faults and triumphs.
Among the participating graduate artists are Philip Bodger, Helen Cleary, Michelle Colfer, Ian Doyle, Elis K. Alyce Geraghty, Aoife Glynn, Emma Hearne, Shannon Keegan, Patsy Kent, Fiona Martin, Anne Martin Walsh, Meghan McLachlan, Catherine Murphy and Andrew Wickham.
