A SUPER SEND-OFF FOR ‘TRUE GENTLEMAN’ PAT
THERE were plenty of good wishes for Pat Quill in the Riverbank House Hotel as he enjoyed his retirement celebrations.
Pat, who lives in Castlebridge with wife Liz, left his native Cork in 1971. He enjoyed a 46-year career working initially as a bus conductor with CIE in the Ringsend garage and then in the Civil Service in the Labour Exchange at Gardiner Street, Dublin 1, as a clerical officer.
In 1976 he was promoted to staff officer and transferred for the first time to the Wexford local office, where he stayed until 1981. A further promotion to executive officer saw him on the move again, this time to Internal Administration, at Leeson Lane in Dublin 2. During his time there he visited almost every local office and branch office in the country in his role of carrying out audits, inspections, assisting during staff shortages, as relief manager and advising on work practices.
In 1989, Pat was assigned to a post at the South East Region of the Department of Social Protection, moving him closer to his home in Castlebridge. In 1993 he took on the role of manager in Wexford local office where he remained until 2009. Then he became Job Facilitator in Enniscorthy where he has been based ever since.
Pat is well known throughout the county and country for his involvement in Ladies Gaelic football. He was National President of the Association from 1985 to 1988 and from 2009 to 2015. He has been part of the huge growth in the sport both nationally and internationally which he witnessed first-hand in visits to Asia, Australia, Europe and the USA.
He has coached and managed Leinster, Wexford and his club Shelmaliers teams to All Ireland, Leinster and County championships. In his retirement he will no doubt be kept busy spending more time with his family, as well as being on the National Management Committee of the Ladies Football Association, at his club, tutoring and family visits to ‘Gods Country’ – Castletownbere.
Pat, who is described by his colleagues as a ‘ true gentleman’, was wished many years of health and happiness in his retirement.
