NEW ROSS
A big field entered the competition for the postponed running of the P.G. Walsh Cup which this time around was favoured by nice May weather.
There was some excellent scoring, none better than that of the big man from Terrerath, Paddy Bennett (19), who led the field home with a cracking 40 points total, and in the process claiming the silverware.
In second place was Brian St. Ledger (10) with 38 points while the ultra-consistent Michael Ryan Jnr. (+2) took third with 37 points. Derek Ronan (2) won the gross, also with 37 points.
Category one was won by Brendan Duffin (8) with 35 points, Cat. 2 went to Seán Furlong (12) with 37 points, and that great competitor, John Murphy (17), took Cat. 3 with 35 points.
The Captain’s mixed saw a big turn-out to honour our Captain, Peter Goggin, played on Friday evening in brilliant sunshine. Mary Kavanagh (8), Declan Quinn (15) and Patricia Quinn (27) brought in the winning score of 46 points.
Second on 42 points were Tom Tyler (16), Brian Dolan (22) and Tess Ryan (23), and Jimmy Meggs (16), Seán O hUginn (19) and Carmel Delaney finished third, also with 42 points.
Last week’s Tuesday evening fourball sponsored by a club member saw some really hot scoring over the 14 holes. Charlie Collins (18) and Ger Freyne (19) brought in a fantastic score of 40 points to barely pip Junior Cashin (5) and John Murphy (17), with that pairing shooting an excellent 39 points. A point behind (38) and in third place came Liam Wall (15) and Frank Cullen (18).

NEW ROSS SENIORS
The going was heavy on Thursday, with a continuous downpour of rain sweeping in from the south. Golf is not a game suitable for this kind of weather, with players all wrapped up in wetgear and clubs slippery in the hand.
Eight teams ventured out but most except the hardy ones abandoned ship after nine holes and some teams cried halt much earlier.
However, the remainder battled on in the trying conditions and completed the full 18 holes. As per normal we had one team running away with the champagne scramble competition, bringing in a great score of 97 points.
They were John Browne (13), Pat Traynor (18), Martin Forristal (19) and Kenny Irwin (22). In second place with 89 points came Tony Harford (14), John F. Roche (17), Billy Redmond (19) and Tony Sexton (23), whilst Andy Ronan (14), Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (18), Luke Power (20) and Tom O’Shea (26) finished third with 86 points. Only one nearest the pin prize was won and that by Michael Lee on the eleventh.
On Monday, June 12, we travel to Waterford Castle and play in their open Senior singles, and we will also have our own four-person team event where three of the four-person team scores will count to decide the winners of that.

This week we had two days of competition, with the re-scheduled Pink Day on May 29 and the weekly competition on Wednesday.

We have great news to report on the teams front! The Mary McKenna team proceed to the next stage of their competition after a great victory over Enniscorthy in a home and away contest over the last two weeks. Well done and continued good luck girls.
The Minor team recorded a marvellous success over Tramore on Saturday in Waterford Castle. Nerves of steel were shown by Ann Banville who battled on to the 20th hole to secure her match. This means the Minor team move to the third round of their league. Continued good luck ladies.
These successes are wonderful for the promotion of our club locally and hopefully nationally. N.R.G.C. is lucky to have such generous and skilled competitors to represent us!
This week the Intermediate team travel to Faithlegg tomorrow (June 5) to take on Rosslare at 2 p.m. All support will be greatly welcomed.
Next Sunday (June 11) the Finn Trophy team square up to Wexford in New Ross. Hopefully our run of good luck will continue.

Tuesday, May 30, arrived and the outlook was good, or so we thought until the early afternoon when the rain came down in buckets. In seconds the umbrellas went up, the rain gear went on and the greens started to flood, so intense was the downpour.
Luckily the duration of the rainfall wasn’t very long and the sun brought smiles back on faces and dried up the greens in no time. What a relief for our sponsors - Joe Butler and Ingrid Ashmore-Butler of Middletown House Nursing Home.
Joe and Ingrid have sponsored a ladies’ competition for many years now and we are extremely grateful for their continued support. Ingrid in her address commended the course staff on having the course in wonderful condition.
She went on to say that she had played early and was delighted she missed the extreme weather that marked the afternoon.

The early ladies escaped the heavy showers the afternoon brought on Tuesday, May 30. However, the afternoon ladies were not to be deterred and as the evening progressed the sun was shining again!

Our ladies’ teams were extremely busy over the past week. The Boyne Trophy played Wexford on Monday but unfortunately, despite their best efforts, victory was not theirs.
The Senior foursomes played New Ross on Wednesday and pulled through their initial struggle to victory.
The Mary McKenna team’s away leg was played in New Ross on Thursday in atrocious conditions but they were not successful.
The Minor Cup team played Mount Wolseley on Saturday but unfortunately were not successful.
The Revive Active team played Faithlegg (home and away) on Sunday and had a great win.
Well done to the teams, managers and caddies for the tremendous efforts of the last weeks. We look forward to the next round of matches, with fixtures to follow.

Our Provincial Towns team won through to the quarter-final by beating Ballymoney on Sunday. There were five matches at home and four in Ballymoney.
Seán Hegarty, Jim Mackey and Davy Murphy won their home matches with the last two players, Willie Dobbs and Eddie Doyle, called in.
The away team was Declan Byrne, Eunan Doyle and Denis Dunne who all won, and James Foley who was called in. Tim Morrissey and John Byrne were the managers. Their next game is at home against the winners of Borris and Kilkenny.
We held the first of what we hope to be an annual event for all the football clubs that play in the Wexford Football Leagues last Saturday. The ladies, men and the referees were all invited.
There was a great turn-out, with clubs from all over the county being represented by four of their members. The only fly in the ointment was the couple of teams that didn’t show up without even as much as a phone call to let us know that they weren’t coming. It just messes up the timesheet for everyone else.
The best three scores formed the team result and there was a singles tournament within that too for the best players on the day.

The presentation to the winners will be done towards the end of the year, probably in October, along with a few other competitions. We also ran a little sideline competition for the day that was in it of guessing the minute of the first goal scored in the Champions League final.

We are running the second instalment of the pairs competition again in conjunction with the US Open. Players in the Wednesday midweeks can take part on both June 7 and 14.
You can enter twice if you wish. The E.G.C. players will be sorted into descending order until it matches the number of players who make the cut in Erin Hills. Pro shop vouchers will be the prizes, with a €2 entry fee.

TAGHMON SOCIETY
The society played Faithlegg Golf Club on May 20, and 39 players turned up for an earlier than usual start at 8 a.m. on a showery morning.
Some players started before that due to a local Communion; they were keen indeed. The course was in great condition and the greens were superb.
The honours went to a new man in the ranks this year, young Peter Marshall who just pipped another new member on a countback.

There were five winners of the twos club, namely Noel Kendrick, Tom McGrath (T, a 40-footer), Pat Murphy, Eamon Roche and Anthony Wadding, winning €18 each.
As you all know, one name comes up very regularly in the twos club, I think he is working towards topping up his pension fund. Anthony regularly goes home with more money than he arrives with.
But, just to show the determination of the man to get in the twos club, here is what happened to him last week: he lands on the green of the first three par threes but misses all the putts for a birdie. Not to be outdone, he misses the green on the 16th yet manages to chip in. What a man! Walter Roche was the winner of our lottery bonus ball. Welcome to Ian Daniels, our newest member. There is an error on your outing cards. The date and time for Rathsallagh should be Saturday, September 23, at 9 to 10.30 a.m. I was fed the wrong information. The culprit may apologise in due course but I won’t hold my breath!
The four best golfers in the society were seconded to represent Taghmon Golf Society in Blainroe recently at a Kilmacud Crokes Golf Society outing and came home with a creditable fourth place after having three birdies after six holes, then falling away for a couple of holes, and then finishing strongly to come in with 71 strokes.
Furlong was brought along for the big drives (he has nothing else). Tony Kelly as usual couldn’t make up his mind which side to play for but was forced to play for Taghmon after we let him be Captain for the day, and then he came in with several brilliant shots to the green from the fairways.
The pieman became the starman with some excellent putting when the other three had all missed theirs. As for Captain Loughy, well, he just kept the scorecard filled in!
The next outing is in Wexford on June 10 at 12.40 p.m. to 2 p.m. As usual, let a committee member know whether you are playing or not. Bring along a friend as a visitor.
ROSSLARE LADIES
Our hard-working Secretary of the ladies’ committee, Mary Frances Codd, was working equally as hard on the course last Tuesday as she does behind the scenes.
Similarly, she deserves as much praise off the course as she does for winning on Tuesday. It was the P.G.A. Tankard competition sponsored by our P.R.O., Jamie O’Sullivan, and we would like to wish them well when they head off for the day to play in their team event.
On Friday, May 26, the ‘Friday mornings’ had their annual end-of-season summer lunch. It was well attended by our lady Captain Doreen McGovern, lady President Fionnuala Kielthy, originator Girlie Martin, plus a host of lady golfers.
Ann Connolly was the winner on the final day with 29 points over twelve holes. We would like to say a big thank you to Sheila Doyle and her helper, Elizabeth Callaghan, who work tirelessly every Friday from September to May to encourage beginners in all aspects of golf.
It is that time of year when you are wondering what to do with your children and teenagers for the summer...our professional, Jamie O’Sullivan, will be running summer camps starting on July 4 for all from seven years up.

ROSSLARE
Paul Conroy (5) was the winner of the singles competition on Sunday in Rosslare.
Paul had a poor start and was four over par after five holes, but from then on his scoring was flawless, playing the remaining 13 holes in three under par.
His birdies came at the seventh, twelfth and 15th, and his halves of 18 points and 22 points proved good enough for a clearcut victory.
In second position on 38 points was Liam Riordan (19). He had a great back nine of 23 points which included six pars. Third, also on 38 points, was Murt Joyce (7).
Gary Collins (+3) recorded birdies at the fourth, sixth, tenth and 17th and a great birdie three at the twelfth to win the gross on five under par. Thomas Walsh (23) won the veterans with 38 points which included a birdie two at the tenth.

Ian Lynch played a great round with birdies at the second, third, fourth, twelfth, 13th, 14th and 18th in halves of 19 and 20 points for a three under par round of 69: great scoring.
The Fred Daly team had their fourth straight win to reach the Leinster quarter-finals. They beat Mountrath, winning all three matches at home.
John Brady, Brendan Rossiter and Nathan O’Brien all won. The away players performed very well with Martin Roche three down playing the 15th and Niall Griffin one down after 13.

Wexford ladies had a one hundred per cent success rate on the inter-club scene in the past week.
Both Junior and Senior foursomes and the Boyne trophy team recorded wins early in the week. The Challenge and Minor Cup teams then had victories over Mount Wolesley and Carlow respectively on Friday and Saturday.
Only 22 eager ladies played on a very wet Thursday which resulted in a sweepstake being held.
Results: 1, Martina Dempsey (21), 36 points; 2, Leonie Furlong (13), 34 points; 3, Osnat Manning (23), 33 points; nearest the pin, Maggie Hearne, 19”. At least now we know the identity of four eager golfers! Next Thursday we have our late Captain Tony O’Neill’s prize to the ladies, and hopefully we will have a full timesheet and good weather to honour Tony’s memory as a gesture of thanks to all his dedication shown to our club.
WEXFORD
A reminder to all parents and Junior Academy members that the next coaching session takes place on Saturday, June 10. The girls’ session is at 11.30 a.m., with the boys’ session starting at 1.30 p.m.
Last Tuesday’s Seniors competition was a 14-hole stableford. The winner (again) was Aiden Cogley with 35 points. In second place and right back to form was George Roche on 32 points, followed closely on 31 points by Lar Kenny.
Wednesday’s 14-hole fourball was won by P.C. Browne and Davy Byrne with 38 points. In second place were Laurence Carley and Andrew O’Brien on 36 points (back seven). Third place went to Allen O’Donnell and Colm Cosgrave with 36 points.
Our course was in magnificent condition for the Captain’s prize which took place on Saturday and Sunday. The top qualifier was the wee man himself, Tom Connon, with a fantastic nett score of 61.
Laurence Carley and John O’Neill were next best qualifiers on 69 nett. In all 32 qualified and full results of the Captain’s prize will be in next week’s notes.
Unfortunately, Chairman Tom narrowly missed the cut having driven into a bunker on the last hole and causing a sand storm in the area.
The Joker draw now stands at over €2,500. A €2 sub will get you in to the draw which takes place in the clubhouse every Sunday at 8 p.m.

ST. HELEN’S
Some of our members are coming into great form down in St. Helen’s Bay lately. On Sunday, May 28, Stephen Kearns (11) and Seamus Kelly (5) had a ding-dong battle for top spot in the open singles.
Seamus had three bogeys, two birdies, one eagle and one double bogey in his round of one over par 73. Stephen recorded three bogeys, three birdies and two double bogeys in his round of four over 76. Stephen came out on top in the stableford competition, 43 points to 40.
The Friday nine-hole summer league saw Pat O’Connor (4) return a two under 34, spoiled by two bogeys.
