Bakesaleraises€3,150forRory
A COLOURFUL CAKE called after seriously ill Tintern youth Rory Whelan, was the winner of a chocolate cake competition recently which raised over €3,100 for him as he undergoes treatment at hospital in Dublin.
28 businesses from the Fethard On Sea area attended the ‘Cake Biz’ competition, which was organised by Fethard on Sea Country Markets.
The businesses in Fethard and the Hook got full behind the fundraiser and baked a cake each to raise funds for Rory and people got to vote on their favourite cake. The competition was a great success with €3,150 being raised today to assist Rory and his family.
Around €15,000 in total has been raised to support the family of the talented Wexford hurler Rory Whelan, between GoFundMe donations and money raised from fundraisers like Cake Biz.
Rory, 13, from Tintern, Saltmills, was in perfect health up until early April when he was taken to CareDoc on the Easter bank holiday weekend and was diagnosed with a chest infection. He was later diagnosed with Guillain-Barré Syndrome - a condition where the immune system attacks the body’s nervous system and muscles.
Charlene Hiscock of Fethard Country Market judged the competition, along with Olive Power. Ms Hiscock said there was great creativity on show with cakes featuring names including Jimmy O’Leary’s garage, Pigs in Mud and St Mary’s Hall committee’s overall winning creation, Rory’s Chocolate Factory, being outstanding. Ms Hiscock said: ‘We raised €3,150. Hundreds of votes were sold prior to competition day.’
