Reliable Carthy wins ladies’ crown

-

THE MR Oil County Wexford Senior road race championships took place in Barntown on Friday.

The warm, humid and testing conditions made for a tough evening of racing. If Forth Mountain could have been moved a little to the south, and out of the way, more than a few of those participating would have been much the happier!

The ever-reliable Jackie Carthy (Kilmore) was undeterred by the hilly course as she quickly stamped her authority on the ladies’ 5k race and built an ever-increasing lead on the field all the way to the finish.

For Jackie’s fellow Kilmore athlete Helen Doyle and Emily O’Connor of Slaney Olympic, it was a much closer affair as they fought it out for the minor placings. Emily broke first, leaving Helen to stride home in second place, with Emily taking the bronze.

The men’s 10k race was no less of a processional affair as the in-form Ger Forde (Slaney Olympic) made light work of the tough two-lap course. With Ger out of sight, the chasing group worked together until Myles Gibbons (S.B.R.) decided it was time to move through the gears. He had a minute to spare on his pursuers at the finish line.

The fight for bronze saw a bit of a ding-dong between S.B.R. duo Noel Kennedy and Paul Gibbons and U.S.A.C’s Alan O’Connor. They crossed the line in that order with just two seconds separating Gibbons and Kennedy.

Wexford Athletics Chairman Paddy Morgan complimented hosts Wexford Marathon Club on a very well-organised event.
