Wexford racing this Wednesday

-

THERE WILL be a seven-race card at Bettyville, Wexford, on this Wednesday evening (June 21) with almost €100,000 in prize money on offer, the feature being the €20,000 handicap chase over two miles, sponsored by Flood Ironworks from Clonroche.

There are three chases and three hurdles on the programme with the first off at 6 p.m., and the action concludes with the usual bumper at 9 p.m. With the weather looking set fair, this should be an entertaining sporting and social evening.

Card details are: 6 p.m., The Welcome To Wexford Racecourse Novice Hurdle of €13,000, over two miles; 6.30 p.m., The Oulart Maiden Hurdle of €11,500, over three miles; 7 p.m., The Vinegar Hill Handicap Hurdle of €16,500, over two miles; 7.30 p.m., The Boolavogue Handicap Steeplechase of €11,500 (Rated 80-102), over three miles and a furlong; 8 p.m., The Pro-Form Beginners’ Chase of €12,500, over two miles; 8.30 p.m., The Flood Ironworks Handicap chase of €20,000, over two miles; 9 p.m., The Loch Garman Flat Race of €10,000, over two miles.

During a quiet enough week for Wexford connections in Ireland, Jamie Codd won the bumper at Roscommon for Joseph O’Brien aboard Champagne Paddy (9/2), snugly beating Katie Walsh on Scheu Time.

The order was reversed at Downpatrick on Saturday when Katie won on Decision Time for John Kiely, with Jamie second on Gordon Elliott’s Osco Mosco, with Paul Nolan’s Getaway Katie in third.

Two Wexford jockeys scored at Downpatrick on Sunday, Seán Flanagan romping home on Noel Meade’s Jack Slade (6/1) in thre three-mile beginners’ chase, and J.J. Slevin giving a good ride to I’m An Izz Wizz (9/2) to get up by a length for Co. Down trainer, Liam Lennon, in the handicap chase.

Flanagan has continued last year’s good work with Meade and has already had ten winners to sit in fifth place in the jockeys’ table at this early stage.

This was Slevin’s first win of the new season from his 15 rides.

It will be nice to see the Wexford lads in action on home soil on Wednesday evening.
