NEW ROSS

It was a busy time in the club with open week taking place and competitions designed to suit everybody every day. The weather was reasonable too, adding to the enjoyment for locals and visitors alike.

First up on Friday, June 9, was an open four-person scramble with a good number taking part. The winners with 87 points were Tim Murphy, Noel Murphy, Kieran McGrath and John McDonald.

Second place went to Brendan Duffin, Bridget Duffin, Eamon Wall and lady Captain Marie Therese Wall with 86 points. A better back nine and a final tally of 85 points saw Elsie Redmond, Mags Sutton, Mary J. Maher and Eleanor Roche take third.

On Saturday the open fourball sponsored by Frisby Furniture saw Davy Doran (10) and Harry Rheinhart (14) emerge the winners with 40 points by virtue of a better back nine. On the same score (40 points) and placed second were Declan Merrigan (10) and Michael Butler (10), whilst Ned Conway (15) and Richie Aylward (18) took third with 38 points.

Sunday saw an open singles sponsored by the club and the winner was John Browne (13) with 37 points. Second spot went to Jimmy Meggs (16) with 36 points, and Peter Ryan (13) finished third also with 36 points. Michael Ryan took the gross prize with 31 points.

Category 1 went to Ger Treacy (7) from Gowran Park with 35 points. Cat. 2 was won by Leo Carroll (35 points) and Cat. 3 went to Willie Whitty with 34 points.

The Junior Cup team failed to qualify in Courtown but the South Leinster squad had a great win over Rosslare and are now in the last eight of that competition.

NEW ROSS SENIORS

We had a big travelling contingent at the picturesque Waterford Castle golf course on Monday, June 12. Ten teams took part with two best scores counting over the 18 holes.

The course was in immaculate condition with both fairways and greens up to championship standard. With fine weather prevailing, we had great golf in the scenic setting by the Waterford estuary.

It was a battle royal over the 18 holes with only five points separating the first five teams home, showing the fairness of the draw for teams. Late withdrawals were annoying to the organisers and there is no use putting your name on the timesheet if you cannot travel, and notification of your non-availability should be made in good time. Penalties will be imposed in future for such transgressions.

Taking the accolades and the ‘McGuigan Wines’ with a fine score of 88 points were John Murphy (17), Jimmy ‘Ross’ Ryan (17), Willie Naddy (20) and Jamesie Murphy (23). Second place went to Tony Harford (14), John F. Roche (20), Donie Cody (23) and Jim ‘Dublin’ Ryan (24) with 87 points.

Third with 86 points came John Joe Cullen (18), Patsy Farrell (19), Liam Glasheen (20) and Jim Kehoe (24). Fourth were Tommy Ryan (15), Tony Redmond (18), Jimmy O’Neill (19) and Paddy Mahoney (19) with 85 points, whilst Denis Kirwan (11), Willie Whitty (18), Kenny Irwin (21) and Richie Byrne (21) were fifth with 83 points.

Many thanks to Ryan Madigan at Waterford Castle for his co-operation in making our annual outing there such a success, and also to the restaurant for the excellent food they served up.

We resume our normal home game this Thursday with the draw for teams at 9.40 a.m. sharp, and a reminder to all that the lady Captain’s mixed (Marie Therese Wall) is on that afternoon from 4 p.m. and all are invited to participate.

NEW ROSS LADIES

On Wednesday, June 14, an 18-hole open stableford competition was held for ladies and men. The response was very good. The day was sponsored by Caroline Foley, Caroline Hair Creation, North Street, New Ross.

Results: 1, Carmel Delaney (36), 38 points; 2, Teresa Foley (17), 36 points; 3, Teresa Byrne (20), 35 points; men, Mark Murphy (13), 36 points.

This week is the highlight of the year for Captain Marie Therese Wall, with her prize to the ladies over two days. No doubt she has her fingers crossed for the good weather to continue for the week.

As usual booking is online but ladies are urged to arrive at least 15 minutes before their selected time so that a draw can be done involving every three lines on the timesheet. This stipulation applies to both Wednesday and Saturday.

Ladies are asked to add their names to a list in the bar if they would like to join the lady Captain for a meal before the prize-giving on Saturday night.

Only a lady member who has submitted three completed competition cards for 2017 is eligible to win the main prize.

The fourball matchplay league in honour of the late Kathleen Pyne will be run off in July. Please add your names to the list in the locker room.

Volunteers are needed for the Junior summer camp from July 3 to 7. If you can spare two and a half hours any day it would greatly appreciated. The purpose is only supervision. Please consider adding your name to the list of volunteers that is on the bar counter.

The Boyne Trophy team face Thurles on Tuesday, June 20. Two fourballs will travel to the Tipperary venue and three fourballs will do battle at home. The matches start at 11.30 a.m. Good luck girls.

The Intermediate Cup quarter-final is pencilled in for Tuesday, June 27, at 3 p.m. in Bunclody against Wicklow. It would be great to proceed to the semis! Best of luck in the preparation for that important match ladies.

Many thanks to team managers/selectors, players and caddies who give of their time and money so generously to represent the club. We are very lucky to have such commitment from our ladies.

COURTOWN

It was back to the normal on Tuesday, June 13, following the madness of the previous week. It was a pity, as there were no outrageous ensembles on view anywhere.

The course was in fantastic condition and the day could not have been better weather-wise. Our sponsor was Luca Boutique.

We are extremely grateful to Fiona Lacey for the continued sponsorship. Fiona played in the afternoon and was on hand in the clubhouse to present her wonderful prizes.

Results: 1, Katie O’Hart (8), 39 points; 2, Maria Coone (11), 37 points (countback); 3, Mairéad Carty (20), 37 points; Cat. A, Ann Bernie (17), 36 points; Cat. B, Angela Merrigan (26), 36 points; Cat. C, Mary Cooper (32), 35 points.

The nine-hole was won by Brigid O’Brien (34) with 16 points, and second was Margaret Jones (34) with 15 points.

The longest drive on the eleventh was won by Katie O’Hart, and nearest the pin on the 18th was won by Ann Codd. Congratulations to all our winners.

The previous week saw the Challenge Cup team managed by lady President Marcella Jones go to Enniscorthy to play Callan where they won a very tough match.

The Finn Trophy team managed by Catherine Quinn travelled to Druids Heath where they also had a successful result. Well done to both teams.

Unfortunately, on Monday The Revive Active team managed by Mona Moynihan lost in a very close match to Wicklow - hard luck ladies and well done to Wicklow.

Saturday, June 17, brought the start of open week where there are competitions of all sorts to be played. The timesheets are available on the website or phone the Pro Shop to get your name down. The forecast is looking fairly good too, so no excuses this week. We’d love to see you out playing.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of one of the true gentlemen of our club, Steven Redmond, who passed away last week. Steven was a former trustee and past Captain of the club. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

There was much talk last week when it was reported that the one and only Tom T.H. Hardiman had scored a hole-in-one during the fourball on Sunday, June 11. Tom, being the man he is, accepted all the good wishes and congratulations that came his way.

Alas, a great mistake had been made it was not Tom but his playing partner, Colm Brennan, who scored the ace on the par three 14th. We should have known better.

The matchplay competitions are progressing according to the timetable, and we are now down to the last eight pairings in the competitions.

What a terrific start we had to our open week. On Saturday and Sunday we played golf in weather that was more like the Mediterranean climate as opposed to the wet conditions that we have had to endure over the last few years; long may it continue. Any combination fourball, Sunday, June 11, sponsored by Tom Hardiman, Gala: 1, Paul McDonald (14), Martin Byrne (20), 44 points; 2, Eamonn Byrne (15), Jimmy McDonald (11), 42 points; 3, Joe Sinnott (19), Marion Sinnott (18), 41 points. Wednesday open singles sponsored by Heineken, June 14: 1, Jim Peppard (22), 39 points; 2, Des Roche (6), 38 points; 3, Brian Spencer (28), 37 points; gross, Ciarán Sheridan (2), 33 points. Open two-person team event sponsored by Alan Gray, Nelson Hydraulics: 1, Eamonn Byrne (15), Jimmy McDonald (11), 60 points; 2, Ray McGrath (10), Paul McDonagh, 56 points; 3, Mary Kilbride (21), Mary Osborne (19), 55 points.

Our Jimmy Bruen Cup team took part in regional qualifying in New Ross on Saturday. Sixteen teams teed it up in strokeplay qualifying on Saturday, with the top four teams making it through to the matchplay stage on Sunday.

We were out first on Saturday at 8 a.m. alongside hosts New Ross. The team members were hoping to match last year’s performance when we won our regional qualifier in Bunclody.

Unfortunately, this was not to be as our team missed out on qualifying for Sunday’s matchplay stage by one stroke in a sun-drenched New Ross. Hard luck to all concerned.

The team was Davy and Nicky Murphy, Shane Fortune and Frankie Morrissey, Philip Browne and James Morrissey, Denis Dunbar and Seán Hegarty, and finally Alan Jacob and Josh Martin. Team managers were Nigel Cullen, Shane Dunphy and Maurice Nolan.

Our Barton Cup team played Callan on Thursday, with the winners to advance to the quarter-finals of the competition. We had three matches at home and two matches away with the first games teeing off at 4 p.m. in Enniscorthy and 4.20 p.m. in Callan.

We are delighted to report that the team won against a very strong Callan by three games to two to secure a place in the quarter-finals.

Adam Jordan and Nicky Murphy won at home with Frankie and James Morrissey and Paul Conroy and ‘Butch’ O’Connor winning away. Shane Fortune and Martin Sludds, and Eddie Doyle and Paul Lynch, lost their games to strong pairings from Callan. Congratulations on a great performance to all of our players and to the management team of Paul Connolly, Murt Mangan and Jason Rackard.
