Athletics finals Sunday
THE FINAL county event in the Community Games calendar will take place on Sunday, June 25.
The athletic finals will be held at The Hub in Enniscorthy and are keenly anticipated with most of the Areas participating. All we need now is a fine day with the sun shining to make it perfect for the children to compete, and their parents and families to have a great day out.
The day will begin with the annual parade of the competing Areas who march around the track behind their Area banners. The children really get into the swing of things with many youngsters singing and doing cartwheels and generally enjoying themselves. Let’s hope all Areas will participate.
This year the Craanford Area will have the honour of leading the parade. The pledge will be read in English by a competitor from the Kilanerin Area and in Irish by a competitor from the Castlebridge-Crossabeg Area.
The Community Games torch will be carried around the track by a competitor from the BBBCR Area.
Once all the formalities have been concluded, the events themselves will get under way at 11 a.m, with the hurdles being the first event on the track.
A reminder that the hurdles events (Under-10 and Under-14, boys and girls) will be run off right to the finals. The field events will start at 11.30 a.m. with some taking place on the in-field and others on the rugby club grounds.
Managers and parents should keep alert and listen out for the events as they are being called.
Areas are reminded that only the children whose names are uploaded onto the online system can compete. A competitor can only compete in one individual event and one relay.
Again, team managers should note that their relay entries (with all team members named) should be handed in at the recording desk by 12 noon. There can be no changing after this time. No starting blocks are allowed.
There will be a break for 45 minutes after all the heats have been concluded. The afternoon will focus on the semi-finals and finals and relays, and the conclusion of the field events.
The county committee members need the assistance of all Areas, so please make sure that your Area has someone to help out.
The first and second rounds of the Leinster team events have been under way in the past week or so. Wexford have eleven teams competing.
The Piercestown-Murrintown Under-13 boys’ rounders team had a good win over Ballon-Rathoe, Co. Carlow, and are now through to the semi-finals.
The girls’ Under-13 rounders team which is also from the Piercestown-Murrintown Area had a 24-7 victory over Ballon-Rathoe of Carlow to advance to the Leinster semi-finals.
The Gaelic football Under-14 girls’ team from the Rathgarogue-Cushinstown Area defeated Bennekerrry-Tinryland, Co. Carlow, in their second round match to reach the semi-finals.
Hard luck to the Under-10 mixed football team from Rathgarogue-Cushinstown which lost out to Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow ,in their encounter. Out too went the boys’ Under-12 outdoor soccer team from the Castlebridge-Crossabeg Area.
There was very little between the teams, with St. Pat’s of Kilkenny taking their chances. The fast astro surface on a wet night did not do the Wexford team any favours either and unfortunately they lost out 2-1. It was a close game and well done to all team members.
